About Morale Fiber Blog
Although my slogan is “Until morale improves, the crocheting will continue,” this blog is about everything to do with fiber art, not just crochet exclusively. Crochet was my gateway craft, but you might also find knitting, spinning wool, dyeing fiber, felting, sewing, refashioning, and more!
I began writing and publishing here so that I could have one main journal where I could share everything I created, and over the last 5-6 years have developed a big catalogue of free content. I’m particularly interested in offering free crochet patterns as an alternative to purchase-only PDFs because I love being a part of the crochet community and want to make quality content available to everyone – plus I love seeing what you make! 🙂 To find links to my main offerings, check my Home Page.
About Me
I started crocheting when I was about 10 (thanks Mom!) and took it up seriously when I was 19 – over the years I have discovered that I really enjoy the creativity & challenge of creating my own crochet designs.
Morale Fiber started in 2011 as I began to sell my handiwork at small festivals. In January 2015 I started selling my original designs online and blogging about my art. I draw my inspiration from folklore, costuming, subculture fashions, and the beauty of the natural world.
I live in Bloomington, Indiana where (when not hunched over surrounded by hooks and needles with yarn in my teeth) I also enjoy reading fantasy, mythology & classic literature, cooking, jogging & dancing, going to festivals, and playing with small mammals (human or otherwise). I graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s in the Liberal Arts.

Hi, I am so glad I found your site. I haven’t crocheted In a hundred years, I knit an. ld sew. But I have a young friend who crochets like a crazy woman! She is fast and amazing, just pulling something out of her head it seems. I would like to have her crochet a circular vest for my granddaughter, who is a 5 year old hippie. I love her style! I think Joy would LOVE the mandala circular vest. Have you made this pattern in a child’s size?
I’m so glad you enjoy my blog! I personally haven’t made the mandala vest pattern in a child’s size, but I know someone who has – I believe she just used a smaller weight yarn and a smaller hook to size it down, but then I think her young gal was a little older, maybe 9 or so? You could use both a thinner yarn and a smaller hook size and if that still looks like it will be too big, skip some of the repeats of Rnd 25 to shorten it. Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of kid’s garments because I don’t have one of my own, so that’s about as much as I know for this one!

Hi Ashton! I’m so glad you like the duster design! Every duster I have made except the all white one pictured for the Large size has been made mainly from yarn reclaimed from old sweaters, mixed with some handspun yarns and some scraps of commercial yarns. Unfortunately since I use recycled and handspun, there aren’t any commercial yarns I can recommend to you to use to get the same color scheme. Universal Yarns Bamboo Pop is a good yarn in the same weight that has many color varieties, which I usually point people toward when asked this question 🙂 🙂 For me, I really liked to use recycled yarn because it gives the piece a look that can’t be gotten with just commercial yarns, so if you are interested in learning how to reclaim yarn from sweaters you can check out my tutorial on the blog here:

There is not a video tutorial for Rnd 9 yet, although I do plan on creating a video for this piece very soon – if you would like to message me via e-mail (moralefiber@yahoo.com) or through Facebook messenger to my business page (www.facebook.com/moralefiber) I can send you some pictures which should clarify the round – it’s one a lot of people have trouble with at first.
I actually found the YouTube tutorial for the vest and it has helped me get through Round 9.
Oh yes! That’s great, ha – I have no idea why I didn’t think of Cynthia’s video! 🙂 Glad you found it!
But, I am driven to inquire, what will happen if one’s morale DOES improve ? I mean, here I am in my late 70s, finally at the stage where I am secure in a place I love (even though my husband is gone forever) and no-one to tell me what to do or when to do it … so MY morale is pretty damned good.
Still, you do live in a country where there are people who actually support DJT …

Hello. Love your designs!! I have purchased the unforgettable yarn with intentions of making your medium elf coat. I can crochet simple things, however, I am having great difficulty learning the Tunisian crochet. Your pattern says you can use single crochet instead. Do you happen to have the medium elf coat pattern using single crochet? I’m not sure how to substitute the tsk for single crochet and am eager to make for my granddaughter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Hi Lorraine! Unfortunately I only offer this design in Tunisian, sorry! Any advice for translated is all already in the pattern notes, unfortunately since I haven’t done it myself I don’t have any further info to offer – however, you can ask my Facebook group which is linked from my FB business page, they are very helpful and I’ve seen some people do it with SC in that group 🙂

It’s really frustrating that a big company would just steal your work like this, though I know it’s not the first time and won’t be the last. You are so talented; you deserve so much better!
