I hadn’t planned on releasing this as part of my fall patterns – in fact I had no idea I was going to design this at all until inspiration struck unexpectedly one lazy afternoon. Instead of doggedly persisting in whatever I was working on at the time, I dropped everything and followed my instinct, and I’m glad I did.

The Freewheelin’ Poncho is probably one of my favorites so far because it is relatively quick AND it’s easy AND it looks damn good. But that’s just my humble opinion, maybe you’d like to see for yourself?
A versatile wrap that works up quickly using a 9.00 mm hook, the Freewheelin’ Poncho features an alluring keyhole collar and a thick fringe at the edges while the lightweight mesh fabric flows and drapes to show off the person underneath.
Inspired by both retro and modern styles, this is a fashionable but easy level pattern for free spirits of all walks.

Pattern written in US crochet terminologyEven though this pattern is written for worsted weight, it looks great in bulky weight as well!

When starting the double chain, I keep thinking it’s too loose. I’m using louisa harding amitola grande and I’m wondering if it’s too thin or I need to go down a hook? Could you offer any advice?
Hi Karen! Since this piece is made with an oversized hook, your gauge is going to be looser than you are probably used to – I would recommend making a gauge swatch in dc, ch-1 repeats to see if you are on target or not. The yarn you are using looks beautiful!

Love your work and I’m sort of flitting between 3 wips (all yours I have to admit 🤗)
I’m not sure what size hook I should go up to to convert the Freewheeling Poncho (which is one of the wips) to make the Driftwood. Did you still use the 9mm to make it a denser poncho for cold weather or go up sizes?
btw – are you in Aus?
Hi Kerri! Yay, I’m glad you like my designs enough to be doing 3 at once! Wow 🙂 🙂 🙂 For the Driftwood Poncho, I believe I used the same size hook as recommended in the Freewheenlin’ Poncho pattern (9mm) and just altered the yarn weight, and that was enough to make it large and in charge 😉 I’m not in Australia, though, I’m located in Indiana, USA 🙂

Do you happen to have rough estimates on the measurements between stages in the pattern? The pattern has the total measurements and gauge, but my yarn won’t comply. I’m using shawl in a ball, which claims to be a #4 yarn, but totally isn’t. My only 9.00 mm hook is acrylic, which I tried at first and it wasn’t pretty. I’m using an 8.00 mm, which looks amazing, but after finishing row 21 it’s still rather short. How tall should it be before starting to shape the collar? I can probably wing it, but thought you might have some better ideas. Thanks in advance! 😊
Oh yeah! I can see why you’d be running into trouble. Shawl in a Ball is rated #4 weight but does not really gauge like a #4 at all, ever, lol! My advice would be to even double up the yarn if you try this pattern again with the same yarn. As for where you’re at now, you’ll definitely need to add rows if you sized the hook down from the recommended size. Let me know what rows you need the measurements for and I’ll try to get them to you! 🙂 🙂 <3
Well, I’m impatient and kept going. I added ten rows to the front, and will be doing the same along the back. It is a few inches short width-wise, but I may add some extra border before the fringe to help with that. Shawl in a ball always gives me issues, bit it’s so pretty I can’t help using it! And, you’re absolutely right, I should probably double it up next time. Thanks, as always, for your input!
